Requirements of sports lighting
Requirements of sports lighting
Because sports are very different,
their lighting needs are also very different. Games with fast action, long
viewing distance and a small game object (like cricket) require high light
levels. However, those with a slower action, a closer viewing distance, and a
larger game object (such as football) require lower light levels
Although the IES provides a guide
to lighting specifications, many other guides recommend appropriate lighting
levels for different types of sports. Most lighting recommendations for
individual sports lighting levels are categorized into play categories.
Most class I sports require a
minimum of 500 lux. However, high-level competitions, such as the Premier
League Football, require a minimum of 800 lux. Football requires that its
grounds be illuminated with at least 1,200 lux. This large amount of light
allows broadcasting companies to offer viewers a high-definition transmission.
Lighting designers generally have
to work around camera platforms, dashboards, speakers and nets when installing
lighting in sports venues. Water, ice, snow, glass partitions, and polished
floors can also be more problematic as they reflect light.
When it comes to ground sports lighting
experts usually make sure the light is well distributed horizontally to avoid
shadows. They use several lighting fixtures to spread light in a stratified
manner.
Unidirectional ground sports such
as skiing, archery, and target shooting need light to be directed to the
target. When lighting fixtures are installed in sports venues, lighting contractor’s
usually direct lighting to targets and ensure that it does not reach players or
spectators.
When sports are broadcast by
television channels, lighting experts typically use a scanning technique by
focusing groups of luminaries across the ground to provide a uniform vertical
distribution of light. In very large stadiums where the distance between the
players, the spectators, and the cameras is enormous, the lighting used is
normally more powerful than what the players really need.
